PROJECT: INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA: Waterfront Development
WORK PROGRAM AND ACHIEVEMENT: The White River in the vicinity of downtown Indianapolis is a major recreational asset for the population of the City, providing a multitude of opportunities for active and passive use. The riverfront is the site of the City's zoo as well as several major parks and golf courses. The River passes several blocks from the downtown core that has been successfully redeveloped over the past twenty years, although the waterfront in this vicinity is largely industrial in character.
Thomas Point Associates worked with a national team of designers and engineers to create a development plan for a fourteen-mile stretch of the White River in the vicinity of the downtown. TPA's focus was on evaluating uses that hold the greatest promise for development in connection with recreational improvements, in a program that respects the existing environment. TPA's economic analysis addressed the tourism and recreational travel market, convention and exhibition activity in relation to the Hoosier Dome, and demand generated by residents and downtown employees.
TPA recommended a long-term development strategy that will build on the strengths of the area and enhance the neighborhoods adjacent to the River. The program includes major residential development, infill retailing and specific hotel and office project areas. Recommendations include residential and retail development locations as well as selected projects that will enhance the use of existing attractions, including the Indianapolis Zoo.
